Pay-monthly vs upfront trade website companies: six compared

A trade website costs anywhere from £30 a month to £4,500 upfront plus a platform fee. The payment model decides who owns the site, what you lose if you stop paying and how much you have spent after three years. Here are six UK companies, three per model, with the sums done.

The two models in one paragraph each

Pay monthly: no or low upfront cost, a flat fee every month, hosting and changes usually included. The risk is ownership. With some providers the site is rented, and it disappears when payments stop.

Upfront: a one-off project fee, the client owns the files and domain, with optional hosting or care plans afterwards. The risk is cash. You pay the full amount before you know whether the site brings in work.

The six companies below were picked because each states its price and its ownership position on its own website. Agencies that sell a broader monthly marketing bundle are covered in our fixed-fee agencies comparison.

1. Trustmark Trades (marketing arm): pay monthly

Best for: Tradespeople who want the site and the local SEO work in the same monthly fee

Trustmark's marketing arm, based in Hove, charges £299 plus VAT a month. There is no setup fee, no contract and no per-lead charge. The fee includes a custom site with service and town pages, directory profiles, a tracked local landline forwarded to mobile, review request tools, completed-job posts to the site and Facebook, hosting, maintenance and an optional jobs CRM.

The site runs on Trustmark's own software. That matters for the ownership question: the site is part of a membership system rather than a set of files you take with you. The company says it works with every UK trade and cites more than 170 members.

Three years at £299 plus VAT comes to roughly £12,900 including VAT. That buys a lot more than a website, but it is the figure to hold in mind.

Verdict: A monthly system, not a monthly website. Fair value if you use the SEO and tracking parts; expensive if you only want the pages.

2. Websites 4 Trades: pay monthly

Best for: Sole traders who want the lowest monthly outlay and own their domain

£30 a month flat, no upfront cost, and the client buys their own domain. Build, hosting, maintenance and unlimited changes are included on the standard package. SEO and logo design cost extra.

Founder Carl Hancock came out of plastering and labouring before marketing and a carpet cleaning business he grew and sold. The company has built only for trades since 2021. There are no written case studies; a logo wall links to live client sites.

Three years costs £1,080. Owning the domain means you keep your web address if you leave, even if the site itself stays with the provider.

Verdict: The cheapest route to a live trade site. Make sure you understand what you keep if you cancel.

3. Tea Powered Projects: upfront plus platform fee

Best for: Established trades firms that want a bespoke site and can commit for a year

Tea Powered Projects in Nottingham publishes a bespoke trade site at £4,500 upfront plus a monthly platform plan from £95 to £1,000, with a 12-month minimum. Managed SEO starts at £500 a month. The sites run on the company's own CMS, which it says removes WordPress plugin and maintenance headaches.

It works with plumbers, builders, electricians, locksmiths and drain engineers and publishes results for a locksmith, a drain engineer and an auto locksmith. It also serves non-trade sectors.

Three years at the lowest platform tier: £4,500 plus 36 months at £95, about £7,920 before SEO. The 12-month minimum is the term to weigh up. The proprietary platform also means a move elsewhere is a rebuild, not a transfer.

Verdict: A premium hybrid. The upfront fee buys quality; the platform plan ties you in.

4. Foresite Design: upfront packs

Best for: Firms with a site already that want a priced, fixed-scope improvement

Redditch-based Foresite Design sells fixed packs: £449 Enquiry Boost, £699 Quote Landing Page and a Full Refresh from £1,750. Hosting is a separate service. The company emphasises page speed and performance scores, and lists roofers, plumbers, electricians, decorators, landscapers and cleaning companies among its trades.

There are no monthly website plans, so three-year cost is whatever pack you buy plus hosting. The examples page is linked but trade case studies are not detailed.

Verdict: Good for a targeted fix at a known price. Not a full build for a start-up.

5. Agass Marketing Solutions: upfront, with a free draft first

Best for: South West sole traders who want to see the site before paying anything

Agass Marketing Solutions, run by Joseph Agass and covering Weston-super-Mare, Bristol and Somerset, builds a free website draft in 48 hours. You pay only if you like it: £499 one-off, or £699 for a WordPress build. Hosting and changes are an optional £30 a month with no contract. The client owns the site and domain.

Sites include service and area pages, reviews and a quote form. Case studies cover heating and plumbing, fencing, roofline, a locksmith and glazing firm, kitchens and bathrooms, and carpentry. Google and Meta ads and local SEO are quoted separately.

Three years with hosting: £499 plus £1,080, so about £1,580, and you own everything.

Verdict: The draft-first model removes the main risk of paying upfront. Strong value for the region it covers.

6. Websites for Tradespeople (JW Digital Services Ltd): upfront, instalments available

Best for: Tradespeople anywhere in the UK who want one price in writing and full ownership

Manchester-based and founded in 2023 by Janusz Wozniak, this company sells fixed-price packages: Starter from £295, Essentials from £595 and Business from £995, all including VAT, with optional 12 interest-free instalments. Monthly hosting and care plans and a monthly SEO service are optional and cancellable monthly. There is also a pay-monthly self-run website builder for those who prefer that route.

Sites are phone-first with accreditations shown up front. The client owns the site and domain outright. Live client sites are shown for a plumbing and heating firm, a groundworks firm and a landscaper, and the trade list runs from plumbers and electricians through tilers and locksmiths.

The instalment option blurs the line between the two models in a useful way: monthly payments, but you own the result at the end.

Verdict: The clearest ownership terms of the six and the widest price range. A sensible default for the upfront camp.

Deciding between the two

Ask one question first: if I stop paying in 18 months, what do I still have? If the answer is 'nothing', the monthly fee is rent. That is fine if the fee is low and the service is good, but you should know it going in.

Pick pay monthly if cash is tight, you want changes handled for you, and you are comfortable with the ownership terms. Websites 4 Trades is the cheapest; Trustmark Trades bundles the most.

Pick upfront if you want to own the asset and can fund it. Websites for Tradespeople and Agass both let you own site and domain for under £1,000, and Agass shows you the draft before you commit. Tea Powered Projects is a different tier for firms that want bespoke work.

Before signing with anyone, read our guide on briefing a web designer as a trade business and the checklist for checking an agency is legitimate. Payment model is one decision; whether the company can deliver is another.

Frequently asked questions

Do I own a pay-monthly trade website?

It depends on the provider. Some rent the site and keep it when you leave; others let you own the domain and sometimes the files. Ask in writing before paying the first instalment.

Is upfront always better value over three years?

Usually, if you only want a website. The sums above show upfront sites from Agass or Websites for Tradespeople costing far less than a £299 monthly system over three years. Monthly systems that include SEO and tracking are a different comparison.

What is a fair upfront price for a trade website?

Published figures from the companies here run from £295 to £995 for a standard site and up to £4,500 for a bespoke build. Anything above that should come with a detailed scope.

Can I pay monthly and still own the site?

Yes. Websites for Tradespeople offers 12 interest-free instalments on its fixed-price packages, after which the client owns the site and domain.
